Presentation at EcoBalance 2016, Kyoto, on LCA of Data Centres – relevance of use stage vs. production

maki staff has presented first results from LCA calculations of a generic data centre, with the focus on the relative relevance of use stage vs. production. Typically a rather small contribution of the production stage is found for primary energy consumption, below 20%, although weaknesses in background data (clean room production, high purity materials…) may lead to relevant under estimation of production given the much better data situation for the use stage (mainly electricity). Our focus where however the various environmental impact categories, where the contribution of the production stage is well above 50% for several impact categories.
