The following projects have been successfully completed for our clients, or are on-going, by maki Consulting, since 2012 (specific products / product groups are highlighted in bold&italics, task types underlined)

  • Expert advice on established and novel metrics for Climate change, for appropriate representation of both long-lived (LLCF) and short-lived (SLCF) climate forcers (incl. particularly methane from livestock), as basis for a possible shift or complementation of metrics for policies under the Paris Agreement.
  • Review of the implementation of a renewable fibre production model in an online LCA Software-System, in line with the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method of the pilot phase (Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) v 6.3), and review of the generated LCI result data set as an EF-compliant data set EF 2.0. For an EU-level indusry association.
  • Reviewer of an improved primary flexible packaging solution in comparison to the former packaging, including on the foreseen external communication and claim, against the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) of the EF pilot phase, and ISO 14020. For an international corporation and a consulting company.
  • Expert advice and testing on a metal product of several novel Resource Dissipation Impact Assessment Methods against ADP Resource Depletion methods; support/advice in method development as invited expert for a global industry association.
  • Expert advice, review, and editing a plastics-specific Environmental Footprint (EF) derived LCA methodology and 10 case studies across various applications, for an international governmental body.
  • Reviewer in a panel review of a PEF-based LCA methodology for cosmetics and personal care products, for an international corporation.
  • Expert advice on a Resource Dissipation methodology development for an international metals industry association.
  • Implement an LCA study on a novel bi-axially tracked, concentrated solar power system with both electricity and heat production, for a private company.
  • Method analysis and expert advice on the new EN 15804+A2 of 2019 in comparison to the former EN 15804+A1 building LCA standards for an EU-level industry association.
  • Expert advice, life cycle modeller and method tester/analyst for an EU-level industry association and buildings of three member companies on the new Level(s) buildings sustainability evaluation and reporting scheme of the European Commission.
  • Expert advice and contribution in stakeholder meetings on the development of Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria for the EU market on data centres and data centre products for an international NGO.
  • Expert advice to several EU-level industry associations in context of the PEF pilot projects of the European Commission and in EU-level harmonised IEC standard development on EN 45555 and EN 45557 on recyclability&recoverability and on recycled content, respectively, mandated in context of the EU Ecodesign Directive.
  • Contractor of the European Commission as partner of a small consortium, supporting the Policy Impact Assessment of the Green Claims initiative policy development, with a focus on environmental and social impacts, stakeholder consultation analysis, co-organising and moderating stakeholder workshops.
  • Contractor of the European Commission as partner of a consortium delivering the Technical support during the transition phase of the Environmental footprint. This work comprises senior-level expert analysis and recommendations of existing and upcoming PEFCR/OEFSRs, analysis of market uptake, development of trainings and webinar materials and holding webinars, support to new PEFCR/OEFSR developments, cross-cutting technical work, answering questions from EF implementing companies worldwide, administrative support to TAB and IPP/SCP meetings, and others. maki has expert tasks across the project and has the role to take care of the project’s overall quality control.
  • Contractor as part of a consortium supporting the advancement of a European Member State’s National LCI database to modern data standards regarding data format, interoperable flow list, enhanced meta data, and data quality information as well as web-presentation
  • Contractor of the European Commission as partner of a consortium on Remodelling the Representative Products (RPs) and Representative Organisations (ROs) developed during the pilot phase of the European Commission’s Product and Organisation Environmental Footprint; Life Cycle remodelling Uninterruptable Power Supply systems (UPS) and T-Shirts. Moreover project-internal Quality Assurance Controller and responsible for the further development of the ILCD format to transport model information as eILCD format.
  • Project-internal reviewer on ILCD and PEF/OEF compliance in the contract “SME support tools for the application of environmental footprinting”, under the PEF/OEF pilot projects of the European Commission
  • Implement PEFCR-supporting PEF/LCA studies for two companies on two different PEFCRs (hot and cold water suply pipes, metal sheets), under the official PEF/OEF pilot projects of the European Commission
  • Database content manager and software development advice for a globally leading LCA database and software provider
  • Developent of a 5-year roadmap for the Thai National Sustainability Centre of Excellence
  • Technical support as reviewer of the three product environmental footprint category rules of the Thai national PEF mirror project for retail, chicken teriyaki and sanitary ware.
  • “Technical support to review the screening studies in context of the PEFCR development”, as official reviewers under the ongoing PEF/OEF pilot projects of the European Commission. List of product groups where maki consulting staff has acted as main reviewers are: T-shirts, Coffee, Bottled water, Meat (cow, pork, lamb), Feed, UPS, Paint, IT equipment (hard disks)
  • Moreover, maki staff has been reviewer of ILCD/PEF compliance of the data sets for the above-listed product groups and also for most other product groups, namely for: Household detergents, Paper intermediate product, Leather, Thermal insulation, Retail (OEF), Dairy, Fish (seafish), Olive oil, Pet food.
  • Advising a non-EU governmental body on the environmental footprint initiative (PEF/OEF) of the European Commission and its implications for the national industry
  • Project partner on framework development and project impact estimation in the EU-wide Specific Support Action “EURECA Datacenter”, on developing a framework and tools to support public bodies in purchasing environmentally sound data centres, data centre products (servers, UPS, cooling, …), and data centre services (and improving their own data centres).
  • Consulting work for a European Commission body with analysis and recommendations on life cycle method harmonisation for ICT products, the enabling effect of ICT, and related topics
  • Presentation of our background report and acting as rapporteur in a workshop on Environmentally Sound Data Centres with the European Data Centre industry, for a European Commission body
  • Reviewer of the container glass LCI data of the European-level industry association
  • Consulting and technical verification of LCI data sets regarding ILCD format and reference flows, data set documentation, for a French LCA consultant
  • Advising a French LCA Industry Association on initial LCI data quality characterisation and identification
